Adolescents: Families and Parenting

Raising adolescents can be challenging in today’s society. Often, parents and their children feel out of control during this stage of parenting. As parents, it is often difficult to distinguish between normal and abnormal adolescent behaviors. Teens today face many pressures, between dealing with peer pressure, the pressure to look or dress a certain way, and the need to feel a sense of belonging.  The issues that can arise during this time of great transformation include dealing with mood swings, choosing negative peers, problems with communication, impulsivity, and self-discipline. Families of adolescents are often confronted with issues such as rebellion, acting out, experimentation with drugs and sexuality, as well as struggling to keep a cohesive family.

I work with children and adolescents with the goal of improving individual and family functioning. This may include individual sessions within a family focus. It may also involve family sessions and parenting assistance.

I have training and experience working with the following issues:

Divorce
Adjustment Issues
Family Conflict
Anger Management
Behavioral Issues/Defiance
Identity Issues
Depression
Anxiety
Eating Disorders
Self-Esteem Issues
Trauma
Abuse
Self-Injurious Behaviors

Individual Counseling:

Working with individuals is a significant part of what I do.  Individuals come in for therapy for a variety of reasons including, but limited to: relationship issues, life transitions, stress management, symptoms of depression, symptoms of anxiety, unresolved anger, or unresolved grief. I also specialize in trauma, abuse, domestic violence, self-injury, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Couples Counseling:

Relationships are wonderful, but can be very difficult at times. Sometimes, couples will find themselves in times of crises. There are other times when a couple is not in a crisis, but has a feeling that things could be a little bit better. In either of these situations, having a counselor assist in the process of change can be incredibly beneficial and completely change the path of one’s life course. Couples seek therapy for many reasons including:

Adjustment Related Difficulties
Codependency
Infidelity
Conflict
Poor Communication
Anger
Life Transitions
Sexual Issues
Substance Abuse

Family Counseling:

Family therapy is a branch of psychotherapy tailored to families to nurture change and development. This type of therapy views change in terms of the systems of interactions between family members. It emphasizes family relationships as an important factor in psychological health. The involvement of families in counseling is accomplished by their direct participation in the therapy session. As a family therapist, my goal is to influence conversations in a way that catalyzes the strengths, wisdom, and support of the family unit.
